NIJOLOY HOME MADHYAMGRAM
India is experiencing a significant demographic transition, with the proportion of elderly persons steadily increasing. Alongside this trend, changing family structures, migration of younger family members, economic insecurity, and the growing feminization of ageing have heightened the vulnerability of older adults, particularly women. Elderly women often face multiple challenges, including widowhood, social isolation, limited financial resources, inadequate family support, and reduced access to care and protection.
The shift from joint to nuclear family systems has further weakened traditional support networks, leaving many elderly women, unmarried women, and widows without secure living arrangements or adequate caregiving support. These challenges are often compounded by health concerns, dependency, and socio-economic hardships.
In this context, there is a critical need for safe, dignified, and supportive residential care facilities that can provide shelter, healthcare, emotional support, and opportunities for social engagement. Such interventions play an essential role in ensuring the well-being, security, and quality of life of vulnerable elderly individuals, enabling them to age with dignity and respect.
OBJECTIVES:
In response to the growing need for safe and dignified residential care for vulnerable elderly women, Women's Interlink Foundation is developing Nijoloy – Home for the Aged, a dedicated facility designed to provide comprehensive care and support to approximately 60 women aged between 60 and 90 years. The Home will primarily serve destitute, abandoned, and economically disadvantaged elderly women who lack adequate family and social support.
The project aims to provide secure accommodation, access to healthcare and medical support, nutritious meals, counselling, recreational opportunities, and a nurturing environment that promotes dignity, well-being, and social inclusion. The proposed facility will include well-equipped dormitories, residential cubicles, a sick room, kitchen, dining hall, recreation and counselling rooms, library, doctor’s chamber, storage facilities, and other essential amenities designed to meet the specific needs of elderly residents.
Currently under construction through generous donor support, the Home will serve as a safe haven for vulnerable elderly women, ensuring quality care, protection, and an improved quality of life in their later years.
We believe in developing and working with networks at community, national and international levels with a rights based approach.
